Instrument No. 5 (PG Strad model)

During my last year of studies at CSVM, I decided to make three violins based on three different molds available at the Violin Museum of Cremona. PG, G and B (MS 32) in order to become familiar with the grand master's style. For this one I chose the PG mold (MS 21) which Strad shop used more frequently in early 1700s. The famous Messiah and Lady Blunt Strads were also made on this mold.

For The top plate I used Engelmann Spruce with tight grains with density of 0.375 and for the back I used Slab cut curly maple from Erie Pennsylvania with density of 0.61.

As usual I improvised the arching with guidance from my teacher Jeff Phillips.  For the scroll I chose a high density American maple.

I decided to set this up as my graduation finished violin. In order to meet the deadline I did the wood treatment and ground at home and finished the varnish work at school.
